Municipal Wastewater and Municipal FOG
The FOG Challenge
The BioFuelBox solution for municipal FOG (fats, oils and greases) reduces disposal costs, enables local fuel supply, reduces carbon footprint, and helps the environment. Each year, municipalities and waste water treatment facilities deal with an increasing amount of FOG in their influent. Anaerobic digesters (ADs) have become the front line for treating complex organic wastes such as those from slaughterhouses, meat processing plants, renderers, and restaurants. The process consists of bacteria breaking down the proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates in organic waste into methane-rich biogas that can be burned to generate electricity. However, certain lipids are not easily digested or converted. In high weight percentages, they can even inhibit the anaerobic processes and clog equipment.

BioFuelBox's NovoStream process treats the lipid content of wastewater streams by converting it into an advanced biodiesel for use in the transportation sector. By combining the NovoStream process with existing anaerobic digester infrastructure, wastewater treatment plants can expand their capabilities to process high-lipid materials like trap grease without sacrificing efficiency or cost.

Optimizing Front-line Municipal FOG Processing for Waste Water
BioFuelBox's NovoStream™ technology compliments existing AD installations by providing a more cost-effective and financially rewarding means of energy production from the lipid content of municipal waste.
Certain fatty acids have been known to slow down the anaerobic digestion process or even kill the beneficial methane-forming bacteria. The BioFuelBox solution is specifically designed to convert lipids and fatty acids quickly and efficiently. Our process converts FOG into biodiesel which yields more energy than converting the same material into gas.
NovoStream does not replace anaerobic digesters since ADs are still needed to process the non-lipid content of organic waste. By using both technologies, treatment plant operators can optimize their energy yields, using the best tools for the tasks.
NovoStream provides waste water treatment plants with a better and more cost effective way of converting their FOG into energy while protecting their investments in anaerobic digesters.

Enhanced Efficiency and Economics for Wastewater Treatment Plants
NovoStream technology can convert lipids into an energy source in a fraction of the time required for anaerobic digestion and the results of the process yield seven times more energy than methane.
For every incoming gallon of grease, anaerobic digester gas produces approximately 12,000 BTUs of energy. NovoStream's conversion of that grease to pure B100 biodiesel yields over 84,000 BTUs. Treatment plants can now combine NovoStream’s lipid processing capabilities with their digesters carbohydrate and protein handling abilities to get the highest energy yields possible from their waste streams.
While most ADs need a residence time of up to 30 days, NovoStream can process waste into fuel in 15 minutes. This decreases the amount of time waste spends onsite and eliminates the costs associated with holding this material for extended amounts of time. .

By working in tandem with your AD infrastructure, BioFuelBox's solution reduces FOG disposal costs and gives treatment facilities an economical and environmentally safe way to process this material.

Environmental Benefits
NovoStream can also help treatment plants reduce their net CO2 production. Digester gas can consist of up to 40 percent carbon dioxide. Combusting methane to produce electricity also produces carbon dioxide - every 1,000 cubic feet of methane burned results in the production of approximately 122 lbs of carbon dioxide.
Converting waste lipids to biodiesel results in a fuel certified by the EPA to produce 86% less carbon dioxide than conventional diesel. Many wastewater treatment plants also consume diesel in their trucks or generators. Biodiesel blends can be run in these engines without modification, helping treatment facilities not only reduce the CO2 produced from waste degradation, but actually reducing their diesel consumption.

Take the Next Step
BioFuelBox helps organizations to meet renewable energy requirements and to reduce pollution - as well meeting fuel needs of fleets, fire trucks, garbage trucks, construction equipment, school buses, etc. with environmentally-friendly waste-derived biodiesel. As the owner-operator, we can help you achieve this without your having to raise additional funds, hiring more staff, or becoming biodiesel experts.
